Swanzey is located in Cheshire County, New Hampshire.  It includes the towns of North Swanzey, East Swanzey, West Swanzey and Westport. 

The town was first granted as Lower Ashuelot in 1733 and was chartered in 1753.  The town saw many battles during King George’s War.  The west part of town had become a manufacturing center for textile, and the east side manufactured wooden buckets. 

Swanzey is home to four historic covered bridges; Carleton, Sawyers Crossing, Slate and West Swanzey.  It was also once the home of Denman Thompson, who starred in the play The Old Homestead. A reproduction of this play is held each summer in Swanzey’s Potash Bowl amphitheater.

Swanzey is comprised of 45 square miles of land and .4 square miles of water.  According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Swanzey’s population at the time included 6,800 people, 1,874 families and 2,666 households.  The average family size was 2.97 and the average household size was 2.55.
